Pool pump and equipment repair in Wake Forest

When the pump hums but won't start, the filter pressure won't come down, or the heater shows an error code, the whole pool stops working. Here's how to describe the problem and what the options usually are.

Equipment we can match you for

  • Pumps and motors: won't start, humming, loud bearings, leaking seals, losing prime
  • Filters: sand, cartridge and DE filters; high pressure, sand or DE blowing back into the pool, cracked tanks, worn cartridges
  • Heaters and heat pumps: error codes, no ignition, not heating
  • Salt systems: low-salt or check-cell warnings, scaled or worn-out cells
  • Automation and timers: controllers, valve actuators, app connectivity, timers out of sync after outages
  • Automatic cleaners: robotic, suction-side and pressure-side cleaners

Before you call: what to note

  • Brand and model of the equipment (usually on a label on the side)
  • What it's doing: noises, error codes, the filter gauge reading
  • When it started, and whether there was a storm or power outage around then
  • A photo of the equipment pad, which helps the company bring the right parts

Safety first: if you smell burning, see scorch marks or a breaker keeps tripping, turn the equipment off at the breaker and leave it off until a qualified technician looks at it.

Repair or replace?

A pump with a bad capacitor or seal is often a quick repair. An old single-speed motor that has failed may be a good moment to upgrade instead. Things a good tech will weigh:

  • Age of the equipment and parts availability
  • Cost of the repair compared with replacement
  • Energy use: single-speed pumps run at full power whenever they're on
  • Whether the equipment is the right size for the pool

Variable-speed pumps and the Duke Energy rebate

Variable-speed pumps can run at low speed for most of the day, which uses much less electricity than an older single-speed pump. If your power comes from Duke Energy, check its Smart $aver pool pump rebate. Duke announced that the North Carolina incentive for qualifying variable-speed pumps rose to $900 starting January 2025. Requirements have included an ENERGY STAR certified pump, a single-family home with an inground pool and installation by a participating contractor, so confirm the current terms, and whether your installer participates, before you buy.

Not every Wake Forest-area home is a Duke customer. Some get electricity from the Town of Wake Forest's electric utility or an electric cooperative, which run their own programs, if any.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pool pump hum but not start?

A common cause is a failed start capacitor, or a seized motor or impeller. Turn it off so the motor doesn't overheat, and have a technician diagnose it.

Why is my filter pressure high?

Usually the filter is dirty and needs backwashing or cleaning. If pressure stays high right after cleaning, there may be a blockage, or the sand or cartridges may be worn out.

How long does a salt cell last?

It varies with hours of use, water chemistry and how well it's kept clean. Scale shortens cell life, so keep pH in range and clean the cell when it asks for it.

Do I qualify for the Duke Energy pool pump rebate?

Only Duke Energy customers who meet the program requirements qualify. Check Duke's Smart $aver pool pump page for current terms, and confirm your installer is a participating contractor before buying.
