Green pool cleanup in Wake Forest

A pool can go from clear to green in a few hot days. The good news: most green pools can be recovered without draining. Here's what causes it, what the fix looks like, and what it typically costs.

Why pools turn green

  • Chlorine ran out. Hot weather, heavy use or a few missed days lets free chlorine drop to zero, and algae takes off.
  • Too much stabilizer. Years of chlorine tablets build up cyanuric acid (CYA), which makes chlorine less effective. Water can look fine on a basic test strip and still grow algae.
  • Poor circulation. A failed pump, a clogged filter or a timer that reset after a power outage means the water stops moving and stops being sanitized.
  • Debris and runoff. Leaves, pollen and storm runoff add nutrients and use up chlorine.
  • A pool that sat closed. Covers that let in light and debris, or a pool that wasn't closed correctly, often open green in spring.

What a green-to-clean recovery usually looks like

  1. Assess. Check the pump and filter first. There's no point treating water that isn't circulating. Test chlorine, pH and stabilizer.
  2. Remove debris. Get leaves and sludge off the floor before treatment.
  3. Shock and brush. Raise chlorine to a level that kills algae and keep it there. Brushing breaks up algae so the chlorine can reach it.
  4. Filter, filter, filter. Dead algae turns the water cloudy blue-gray. The filter has to catch it, so expect repeated backwashing or filter cleaning.
  5. Follow-up visits. Most recoveries take several visits over several days, depending on how far gone the pool is and how well the equipment works.
  6. Rebalance. Once clear, the water is balanced and the pool goes back to normal care, often with weekly service to keep it that way.

When draining and an acid wash beats shocking

Shocking isn't always the best answer. Pool pros sometimes recommend draining instead when:

  • Stabilizer (CYA) is so high that holding enough chlorine to kill algae isn't practical
  • The pool has sat for a long time and is black or full of sludge
  • Plaster is stained badly enough that it needs an acid wash anyway

Draining an inground pool carries risk. A high water table after heavy rain can push an empty shell or vinyl liner out of place. Leave the decision, and the draining, to an experienced pro.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to clear a green pool?

Light algae can clear in a couple of days. A dark green or swampy pool usually takes several visits over most of a week, and longer if the filter or pump needs repair first.

Can I swim while the pool is being treated?

No. Wait until chlorine is back in the normal range and you can clearly see the main drain. Your pool pro will tell you when it's safe.

Is it cheaper to drain the pool?

Usually not. Draining adds water costs, labor and risk. It's typically worth it only when stabilizer is extremely high or the surface needs an acid wash anyway.

Why is my pool cloudy after shocking?

Dead algae and fine particles stay suspended until the filter removes them. Keep the pump running and the filter clean. Cloudiness that doesn't improve can point to a filter problem.
